What is Middle School STAR Testing

Star Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with learning data. Star tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust to each answer your child provides.

These assessments are taken by students in Grade 2 through Grade 11.

All STAR assessments are computer-adaptive tests (CATs). Computer-adaptive tests continually adjust the difficulty of each child’s test by choosing each test question based on the child’s previous response. If the child answers a question correctly, the difficulty level of the next item is increased. If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. CATs save testing time and spare your child the frustration of items that are too difficult and the boredom of items that are too easy.

STAR Math™ assessments help determine math achievement levels to place students into the Accelerated Math™ programs. STAR™ assessments can also be used to estimate students’ understanding of state standards and predict students’ performance on the state test. These assessments help teachers determine appropriate instructional levels and skills that students are ready to learn. STAR Math Assessment takes about 20 + minutes

These assessments are purposeful and are proven to be powerful.

A grade equivalent (GE) and Percentile Rank (PR) scores shows student’s test performance compared with that of other students nationally.

Grade Equivalent(GE) : These scores range from 0.0 to 12.9+.

Percentile Rank (PR): Score range is between 23 and 33.

Students receive a scaled score (SS), which is based on the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct answers. Scaled scores are useful for comparing your child’s performance over time and across grades.

STAR Math scaled scores range from 0–1400.

STAR scores compare your child’s performance to a specific criterion or standard criteria.
